EXHIBITIONS AND GALLERY LEARNING INTERNSHIP

The Exhibitions and Gallery Learning (EGL) Intern will work with the Director of Exhibitions and the Manager of Exhibitions and Gallery Learning to coordinate and lead tours of the New Art Center’s two galleries, to prepare interpretive materials about the New Art Center’s exhibitions, to help coordinate publicity efforts, and to assist at events and during programs. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in all the facets of gallery work at a non-profit community art center that is committed to exhibiting contemporary art. 15-20 hours/weekly preferred.

INTERPRETIVE MATERIALS

This position will focus on creating gallery guides, wall labels and activities to enhance and interpret the New Art Center’s exhibitions. This will require: conducting research on themes and concepts, interviewing curators and artists, and writing succinctly about complicated ideas.

CURATORIAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM

The EGL intern will also assist with preparations for the Curatorial Opportunity Program (COP) jury, a review process involving an advisory panel comprised of artists, teachers, curators, arts writers/critics, and New Art Center staff and Board members.

EVENT & GALLERY SUPPORT

The EGL Intern will assist at opening receptions, gallery talks, curator workshops and drop-in gallery activities. They will also provide gallery security while engaging with gallery visitors.

GALLERY LEARNING & COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The EGL intern will work with staff and volunteers to plan and coordinate engaging public programs and tours for our constituents at high schools, elementary schools, middle schools and charter schools, as well as assisted living communities, women's shelters, Brownie troops and more.

PRESS & PUBLICITY

This position will help with the preparation of press releases, newsletters and other publicity materials for exhibitions and related events. They will also help us maintain and expand our press and contact lists.

DOCUMENTATION

The EGL Intern will be responsible for taking photographs and video at exhibition related events and programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal intern has a love for and demonstrated commitment to contemporary art, art history and exhibition interpretation, as well as an interest in the workings of the NAC programs as described above. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team and well organized. Must be computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office. Working knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign is ideal. The New Art Center can be flexible with an intern’s schedule, but one day should be a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. We would be especially interested in working with anyone who seeks to fulfill an internship requirement as part of coursework.

This position will help prepare for and assist with exhibition installations and de-installations in both of the New Art Center’s galleries.

The Exhibitions Intern will help prepare for exhibitions by developing and organizing gallery materials such as check lists, price lists, artist resumes and artist statements.
