Studio Employment Opportunity

Manager Of Studio Operations and Events

The New Art Center in Newton, a community art school and cutting-edge, contemporary, non-profit exhibition venue, is seeking a Manager of Studio Operations and Events to organize, set up, manage and maintain classroom and gallery spaces and inventories of supplies.

Reporting to the Education Director, this full-time, afternoon/evening position will work closely with faculty and staff, managing set-up for art classes and events, monitoring and managing supply inventories for art classes and general operations, organizing and maintaining equipment and facilities, and developing plans and procedures to keep the educational programs running smoothly, efficiently and safely.

The successful applicant will be highly organized, creative, detail-oriented and be willing to identify and solve a range of space and physical plant challenges. As the primary person charged with organizing and maintaining the visitor/student environment in our studios and galleries, they will be thoughtful about the appearance, ease of use, efficiency and comfort of the Center. They will bring skills of design, organization, event management, care and maintenance, and will use their imagination and creativity to improve the Center’s public environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up tables, chairs, walls, easels, podium, AV and food service equipment in studios and galleries for classes, lectures and special events as needed.

  • Work with staff, teachers and space rental contacts to determine set-up requirements.

  • Review, organize and maintain art and gallery equipment in good working order.

  • Work with teachers to develop materials lists for classes. Maintain supply inventory. Receive deliveries and manage storage.

  • Establish and maintain standards and protocols for neatness and organization of art studios, galleries, kitchen and storage space. Communicate with professional cleaning crew and other contractors about maintenance requirements.

  • Manage set-up for occasional off-site events (school fairs, conference presentations, etc.)

  • Manages setup for annual Arts Ball gala dinner and dance party, including interfacing with catering, decoration, disc-jockey, etc.

This position will require evenings (M - F) and some weekends. It is full time, and benefits-eligible. Generous benefits package.

Manager of Exhibitions and Gallery Education

Description:

Part-time position available for Manager of Exhibitions and Gallery Education for a non-profit art school and gallery. Seeking an organized self-starter, excited to collaborate with a team of curatorial and studio art education staff to connect audiences with art. The position focuses on managing contemporary visual art exhibition registration and interpretation. 

Duties include:

  • preparing written materials and other interpretation strategies to engage audiences in the Center’s exhibitions and related programs.

  • providing security for art works on display;

  • registering artwork;

  • preparing checklists;

  • creating and giving gallery tours, including hands-on projects;

  • visitor interaction and engagement;
Most Saturdays (except summer) and occasional evenings will be required.
Qualifications:
Must have 1-2 years' experience with exhibitions and/or gallery education. Excellent written and spoken communication skills. Bachelor’s degree required in Arts Administration, Studio Art, Arts Education, Art History or the equivalent. Familiarity with Visual Thinking Strategies a plus. Basic computer skills such as Word, Excel, Gmail, Google Apps required; Adobe Creative Suite a plus. Experience managing interns a strong plus. Ability to manage and prioritize a range of projects while supporting the organization’s unique mission and vision for connecting the local community with the wider art world are central to this position.

Description:
Position available for Director of Marketing and Communications for a non-profit art school and gallery. Seeking an organized self-starter excited to collaborate with a team of curatorial and education staff. Will be responsible for developing strategy and implementing all aspects of audience engagement through web, email, posters, flyers, social and print media. 

Qualifications:
Must have 3-5 years' experience with full range of marketing tools.  Experience with fundraising and/or grant writing a very significant plus. Must have a car and be able to work some nights and weekends. Excellent written and graphic communication skills required. Familiarity with Office, InDesign, Photoshop, Constant Contact, FileMaker Pro, basic content management systems and Google Apps for Business required. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker willing to put in the effort to promote and market an organization with a unique mission and vision for connecting the local community with the wider art world. Getting ready for college admission? Expand your artistic talents, develop a plan for what comes next, and enjoy your summer creating and making art. Small class environment promote individual and customized attention to each student. All materials are included. All teachers are highly qualified and teach at the New Art Center throughout the year.

Ceramics – Wheel Throwing and Handbuilding

The New Art Center offers a well-equipped ceramics studio for students to learn methods and techniques of working with potter’s wheel and sculpture. Students will develop a vocabulary specific to the medium and be aware of the safety issues involved in working with ceramic materials and techniques. Teachers will focus on understanding and applying the aesthetics, form, function and expressive potential of clay and the ceramics art. Register Here.

Studio Art mixed media, Drawing, Painting

This 3 weeks course is focused, and challenging, but extremely fun! Students will experience their art making process exploring various techniques and material combinations. Inspired by their imagination as well as from selected modern and contemporary artists students will push the boundaries of artistic expression discovering new ways of creating imagery and visual narratives. Portfolio Preparation

This art class will focus on building a portfolio, and creating artwork with all the requirements needed for college applications. In a small size classroom environment, students will receive customized instructions, and plenty of opportunities for discussions and critique to achieve artistic self-expression with confidence and style. Summer Vacation Art Registration is Open

2014 Summer Art Programs!

Our popular summer programs for children and teens provide students with the opportunity to try a variety of art mediums and develop new skills in a fun, safe and supportive environment, bringing families back year after year!

In our Children's Program and Preteen Program, students attend four classes daily in Visual Arts, Ceramics, Drama Activities and Sculpture/3D.  Grouped by the same age/grade, each student has the opportunity to learn and grow with friends and peers, while creating art and having fun!  The New Art Center environment also gives children the opportunity to work with and be inspired by our professional art instructors, who thrive on the enthusiasm of young artists.  Each week, children gain a sense of accomplishment by creating and bringing home exciting projects inspired by our program themes!

Our Teen Day Program, Afternoon Ceramics Program, & CIT Program enable teens to gain new skills and further develop their interest and abilities in the visual arts.  Our teen programs are small and highly individualized to give teens the knowledge, confidence and skills to create beautiful and intriguinig projects.  Working in Painting/Drawing, Sculputre/Mixed Media and Ceramics, teens will have a great time!
